Best of UberEats 2020: Vancouver, BC

I have a confession — 2020 was the year of Uber Eats in our household.

Partially to support local businesses, and partially because sometimes, I just don’t feel like cooking; my husband and I have been ordering a lot of Uber Eats since the COVID-19 pandemic started.

Side note: We recently decided to get the Eats Pass, and honestly, we regret not doing it sooner. For $9.99/month, you get $0 delivery fees + 5% off at select restaurants. If you make 3+ orders per month, you should definitely get the Eats Pass.

Here is my Best of Uber Eats 2020 List for Vancouver (in no particular order):

1. Mumu Kitchen

I’m going to say something controversial — this is the best Korean fried chicken in Vancouver!

Mumu Kitchen joined Uber Eats recently so they don’t have too many reviews (used to be on Fantuan only), but trust me, their fried chicken is amazing. Usually, when we order fried chicken via Uber Eats, it gets cold and soggy by the time we receive it. We’ve never had this problem with Mumu Kitchen. If you have an air fryer, you can even reheat it the next day and it will still be crunchy.

What we usually get: Yang-Nyum Chicken (sweet & sour), Snow Cheese Chicken (cheese) or Mat Cho King Chicken (spicy & garlicky)

2. Kokoro Tokyo Mazesoba

Attention ramen lovers: here’s an interesting twist to your favourite food. “Maze” means “to mix”, and “soba” means “noodles”. Thick, chewy noodles are topped with braised pork, chives, green onions, garlic, minced saba fish, and more. All you have to do is mix everything together, and slurp away. When you’re done with the noodles, mix in the complimentary scoop of rice to soak up the remaining toppings.

FYI, since they use chives as a topping, it might be stinky when you open the container. If you’ve ever ordered dumplings, you know what I mean. Don’t let that deter you though; it’s delicious!

What we usually get: Niku Mazesoba

3. Brick’n’cheese

This is a new discovery for us. We’ve only ordered from Brick’n’cheese once, but it definitely won’t be our last.

Brick’n’cheese is a “ghost restaurant concept”, meaning they don’t have a storefront and only sell via delivery apps. A ‘brick’ is basically a burrito but instead of rice, they use French fries, and they’re grilled with a panini press. When we got our ‘bricks’, they were still warm and toasty, but there was no condensation on the wrapper at all — I was seriously impressed.

What we got: Signature Brick, Fish’n’chips Brick

3. Las Margaritas

Las Margaritas has been serving Baja/SoCal inspired Mexican food since they opened their doors in 1994. As a patron for just over a decade, I’ve probably tried everything on their menu. If you love Mexican rice and refried beans like I do, you’ll be happy to hear that they come as a side with most mains.

What we usually get: 1/2 Fiesta Platter, Chicken Enchiladas

4. Red Robin

I’ll admit — I don’t usually like ordering from chains, but if you’re craving a good burger, you won’t be disappointed with Red Robin. The slight charred taste from their flame broiled burgers adds so much flavour to their burgers. If you’re Keto/low carb, you can sub your bun for a lettuce wrap, and sub fries for steamed broccoli, at no additional cost.

What we usually get: Whiskey River BBQ Beef Burger, The Madlove Burger

5. RedBeef Noodle Kitchen

RedBeef makes my favourite Taiwanese beef noodle soup in the city. This is probably my “most ordered” restaurant in 2020 (in fact, I ordered it again for dinner last night). Their beef noodle soup is like a warm hug in a bowl. The broth is so hearty and complex, the beef is fall apart tender, and you get to choose between three different types of noodles: white noodles (original), flat noodles, or vermicelli. I’ve tried all three and usually go with the original white noodles.

What we usually get: Signature Beef Noodle Soup, Salt and Pepper Popcorn Chicken

6. Tasty Indian Bistro

This is hands down the best butter chicken I’ve ever had. End of story. We don’t really order anything else. Just get the butter chicken, okay?!

What we usually get: Butter Chicken, Garlic Naan, Rice

7. Kaneko Hannosuke

Like Mumu Kitchen, Kaneko Hannosuke is another restaurant that just joined Uber Eats recently.

Kaneko Hannosuke is a famous Japanese tendon franchise. “Ten” is short for tempura (battered and deep fried food), and don means “rice bowl”. Their tempura is fried with sesame oil, which explains why it looks darker than other tempura. The tempura here is light, crispy, and slight nutty thanks to the sesame oil, but the real MVP is the sauce that you pour on top of your tempura and rice— it is so, so good, and really ties everything together.

What we usually get: Premium Tempura Bowl

8. Salty’s Lobster Shack

Full disclosure: I’ve ordered from Salty’s twice. The first time was amazing, but the second time was not great. To be fair, it wasn’t Salty’s fault — our order was very delayed so everything was cold and soggy by the time it got to us.

We usually get the Connecticut lobster roll ($23), which is served with ketchup chips. FYI, it’s not all lobster. The top layer is real lobster, but the bottom is actually imitation crab meat. I understand lobster is expensive and you can’t expect all lobster for $23, but I think they should disclose that in their description. That being said, their lobster rolls are tasty and I would still order from them again.

What we usually get: Connecticut Lobster Roll, Lobster Bisque
